Stone Found Only In Duchesne County Could Become the State Stone

What is the state bird? The Seagull. What is the state flower? Sego Lily. What is the state stone? Utah doesn’t have one (though it does have a gemstone). Representative Christine Watkins has decided to draft and sponsor HB 188 in the 2021 Utah Legislature, to make the state stone Honeycomb Calcite, something exclusively unique to the Uintah Basin. Honeycomb calcite, which is more than 500 million years old, ranges from a bright yellow or gold to a more brownish amber, like honey. Its hardness is comparable to marble or opal and has a rough appearance at first. The unique coloration comes from iron deposits within the stone and is found only in Duchesne County, specifically in Hanna. The bill passed in the House this week and has moved on to the Senate.
