Creative Process in Full Swing for Upcoming ‘Blithe Spirit’ at Vernal Theatre: Live

Vernal Theatre: Live’s upcoming production is an excellent example of the layers of creativity that go into preparing for a community theatre production. Taking a break from musical theatre, ‘Blithe Spirit’ is a straight play with a director and team that have held nothing back during the creative process of the show’s development. “For our show we decided we wanted to touch on two things, the fact that it is a mystery, as well as a comedy,” shares ‘Blithe Spirit’ director Jen Curtis. “To do this, we took two different approaches at our first two promotional videos. The first, stimulating the spooky aspect. The second, we chose to make it sort of like ‘The Office’, giving the viewer a sneak peak into the minds and personalities of our different characters.” Curtis worked with photographer and videographer Joie Madison in creating both promotional videos which have stirred up interest and excitement for the show on social media. Their ‘Office’ style video has been especially popular and can be viewed on the Vernal Theatre: Live Facebook page. Another real dose of creative juices has been applied to the special effects and props for this show that is, in case you didn’t know, a comedic ghost story. “We have spent many hours figuring out how to make special effects and tricks work to enhance our show,” shares Curtis. With the help of actor David Gale (who plays the haunted husband), and set designer Jay Haslem, Curtis and her team have created an extraordinary visual experience for the audience. The show opens next Friday, February 19th, and runs select dates through February 27th. Tickets are on sale now at www.vernaltheatre.com
