Representative Chew Sponsoring Bill to Address Vehicle Registration Struggle

The move to an all electronic system for reminders of upcoming vehicle registration deadlines has caused confusion for many in the state of Utah and a local representative is offering a solution. Representative Scott Chew is sponsoring HB 170 ‘Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice Requirements’ in the Utah Legislature. The bill offers a solution for those who either do not use email or simply prefer to receive the reminder in the mail. HB 170 would require the Motor Vehicle Division to give vehicle owners the choice to receive a notification of their vehicle’s approaching registration expiration through the mail or by email. The key difference between this and the old system is that for those who prefer to receive a reminder in the mail, the Motor Vehicle Division could charge a fee to cover the cost of mailing the notification. The Utah House Transportation Committee unanimously supported Chew’s bill on Monday sending HB 170 to be debated by the full House.
