In December it is common for people to look to the night sky for signs of Santa Claus. Dinosaur National Monument wants the public to know there are other exciting reasons to stargaze this month. On December 13th and 14th the Geminid Meteor Shower can be viewed in the dark skies of Dinosaur National Monument. There is a chance of seeing up to a whopping 100 meteors per hour. There will be excellent winter stargazing to be had from December 12th to December 17th as the moon’s light will be dim. Look for your favorite winter constellations, such as Orion and his Hounds, Taurus, Gemini, and Auriga. December 21st will be a very special event as Jupiter and Saturn have a great conjunction on the Solstice. It will look like these two planets almost touch. This celestial event has not happened since 1623, shortly after Galileo invented his telescope! To send off 2020 in style, enjoy the full moon on December 29th and December 30th.
