Vernal City Council has agreed to move forward with a program to replace old water meters after it was discovered that many were failing. “We are experiencing water loss in our system above what is expected,” explains Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion. “We tested 8 older meters and 7 of them failed.” It was during a work session in February that the topic of reducing water loss was discussed and it was decided to send the older meters to USU for the testing that revealed the failure rate. Armed with information it was recommended that the City replace the oldest 1000 water meters, which makes up about a third of
the meters
in the system. During Wednesday’s meeting, City Council agreed to move forward with the 2019 Water Meter Change-Out Program. The meeting packet states that the estimated cost will be about $113,000 dollars for meters and $38,000 for installation. The project will require action at the Vernal City budget re-opener in May to approve the funding.
