The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release on Sunday of a critical incident that took place
at about 2am
that day. According to the release, two sheriff’s deputies and two Roosevelt police officers responded to a call of domestic violence at a home near 500 East and 5000 South in Roosevelt where they were told the suspect had a gun. “When the deputies and officers arrived, they found the alleged suspect outside the home. They were attempting to detain the man when he pulled a handgun, racked the gun’s slide to chamber a bullet and began to bring the gun up,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “One of the deputies – concerned for his own safety and the safety of the other law enforcement officers – fired two rounds as the man brought the gun up. The man brought his gun up to his head as the deputy was firing and shot himself in the head. The deputy’s two shots missed the man and struck a nearby [unoccupied] vehicle.” The injured suspect was taken to the hospital and then flown to a Wasatch Front hospital. He is expected to survive. As per the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office policy, the deputy who fired his gun is now on paid administrative leave while an internal as well as an independent investigation is conducted. The Basin Critical Incident Team is conducting the independent investigation. All questions will be referred to them.
