How do you honor the achievements of your parents and grandparents? That was the question facing the family of the late Dr. Terry Mackley Buxton and his wife Diane Christensen Buxton. Dr. Buxton served the Roosevelt community for 37 years as one of the founders and general practitioners of the Roosevelt Medical Clinic. In the early years, the doctors worked long days covering the ER, the OR, while still holding clinic hours. His wife’s dedication to take care of the family, even managing the clinic a few years, allowed “Dr. B” to help establish the Duchesne County Hospital (now the Uintah Basin Medical Center) and help mentor dozens of student doctors and nurses. Their daughter, Julie Wilkins states, “They grew to love the Uintah Basin and the people over the 56 years they lived here. They were married for 63 years and have 4 children, 14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. They left a great legacy for their family and for the Uintah Basin community.” To honor such a legacy the Buxton family created the Dr. Terry and Diane Buxton Endowment Memorial Scholarship and gave $60,000 that will help students that are attending the UBTech Nursing Assistant program. “A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is the first step into nursing,” shares UBTech President Aaron Weight. “What better way to celebrate and honor Dr. Terry and Diane Buxton than aiding students starting their journey into nursing? It’s giving them the gift to begin.” Contributions can be made to increase the scholarship so that it can have the lasting impact just like this couple had on the Uintah Basin.
