There is some great fishing to be had in the Uintah Basin. In fact, there are multiple contests and fishing derbies hosted in the area throughout the year. Well the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has a few tips for those that are catching and releasing. Be sure to use single hooks on lures and bend down the barbs so that they are easy to release. Try to minimize hands on handling as well as time spent fighting the fish. To protect the slime layer on the fish and their fins try using a rubber or coated nylon net. Quickly remove the hook with forceps or needle-nosed pliers and if that is not possible because it is too deep, cut the line as close to the hook as possible and leave the hook. Work to minimize time exposed to the air, especially when the weather is warm. Keep your hand wet while handling the fish. If possible allow the fish to recover in the net before releasing. Make sure it is staying upright and if not, gently move it back and forth. For more fishing tips, visit wildlife.utah.gov.
