The Uintah School Board met Wednesday night in a public meeting where the community got its first glimpse of the proposed school reopening plans. The Board had received the full copy of the plan just 24 hours before the meeting and many in the public attended to see for themselves the proposed plan and offer their input in person. A flyer was handed out to those interested, showing a breakdown for if Uintah County is in Green, Yellow, Orange, or Red status. If Uintah County remains in Green, students will attend school in person Monday through Thursday at 100% student capacity and Friday will be remote learning. If Uintah County is changed to Yellow, students will attend at 50% student capacity with a mix of days and times depending on the school. Orange is similar to Yellow but at 25% student capacity and Red would be a complete shift back to home based remote learning. Masks will be required for teachers but only strongly recommended for students. The public comment period had a mix of input and questions offered by parents, teachers, and at least one student, with the majority of comments urging the board to get kids back in school and return normalcy to their lives. The mental health of students was also emphasized, in particular by one high school student who described his personal struggle with mental health since school was shifted to home based learning and his plea that school go back to normal. The Board approved a motion to table the item and meet again next week in order to offer more time for the public to submit their input. The full draft of the proposed plan will be made available to the public and Wednesday’s meeting can be viewed on the ‘USD LiveStream’ YouTube channel. A link to the channel is provided on the Uintah School District Facebook page. Public input can be submitted through www.surveymonkey.com under ‘Community Input for USD Board (July 2020)’.
