20 Years of Old Glory Flying in Dry Fork Canyon Continues

by | Jul 6, 2020 | News | 0 comments

On July 3rd, a small group of locals stood high atop a familiar ridge in Dry Fork Canyon and carefully changed out the American flag. Ivan Merrell, Randy Merrell, and Doug Murphy are the unseen heroes behind this landmark that has proudly flown the red, white and blue for the last two decades. “I was blessed to go up with them…and help retire the flag that was replaced BARELY a month ago over Memorial Weekend,” shares Megan Carroll-Munoz. “In just one month’s time, the flag quickly became tattered and torn, but continued to billow majestically, and embraced the unpredictable Dry Fork weather. This year marks the 20 year Anniversary of when Ivan Merrell put together an Eagle Scout Project that incorporated an amazing engineered flag pole that could withstand the weather and help display our country’s flag.” This labor of love shown by Ivan Merrell, Randy Merrell, and Doug Murphy year after year is a worthy example of true love of country during this time of celebrating America. “The replacement flags are purchased with donations,” explains Megan. “ If you consider it was just replaced a little over a month ago, you can imagine how expensive that can be. But this flag has become one of Vernal’s cherished landmarks, and I urge anyone that can to help keep our American Flag blowing to please donate.” Donations can be made in the donation box as you drive up Dry Fork Canyon or at Mountain America Credit Union.
