The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands has a clear message for the public: more support is needed to reduce human caused fires as firefighters are responding to an all-time high amount of preventable fires. “Fireworks and abandoned campfires are causing a lot of problems for firefighters in Utah right now,” shares Fire Management Officer Brett Ostler. “A significant increase in public outdoor recreation and careless actions are contributing to the number of ignitions. These preventable fires significantly increase the public safety risk…Fire restrictions are already in place in many areas of Utah,” Ostler adds. The cost to individuals being careless and causing wildfires can be significant. According to state law, it is illegal to possess or ignite fireworks on state or federally administered lands. Fines can reach up to $100,000 dollars and responsible parties are billed for ALL fire suppression costs. Ostler points out that many recent fires were caused by fireworks but it is also crucial that all are careful with campfires as well as vehicles. “A hot exhaust system or embers from a campfire can result in a very dangerous situation for firefighters and the public.” For more information on preventing human caused wildfires, visit www.utahfireinfo.gov.
