Derailed Train Cars Result in Massive Explosion and Fire in Rock Springs

A train derailment just outside Rock Springs on Saturday, that resulted in a massive explosion and fire, is under investigation by the Federal Railroad Administration. According to SweetwaterNOW.com, 26 train cars derailed just before 3pm and of those 26 cars, 10 were destroyed as they were carrying ethanol and alcohol which resulted in a massive explosion. The explosion caused a fire that burned up to 25 acres of BLM land. SweetwaterNow reports that the Federal Railroad Administration could take up to a year to confirm what caused the accident. The debris from the explosion has been moved off the tracks and will eventually be cleared away. One of the main rail lines was reopened and the second line is expected to be ready to reopen on Monday. Many agencies came together in the response including hazmat teams from Utah. SweetwaterNow reports that 2 deputies received burns from the explosion but both were treated at the hospital and released.
