After some back and forth, Uintah High School graduation is on again. The Uintah High drive through graduation celebration was deemed a massive success last month and as a result Uintah High School administration decided to conduct a poll of the seniors. They reported that 70 percent of senior students no longer felt that a traditional graduation ceremony was needed and just over 50 percent of seniors were hoping for a community/parent sponsored grad night. At that time they announced that they would respect the majority decision of the seniors and not hold a traditional graduation ceremony. On Monday, Uintah School District announced that after weighing feedback from the community, UHS Principal Sharon Shipton determined to go forward with a traditional graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020. “I initially decided to cancel graduation to honor the wishes of the majority of the senior class who chose to respond to a survey I sent out,” explained Shipton. “It was never my intention to disregard the wishes of their peers or their parents, and I apologize to them. We are committed to holding a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 once conditions permit. We understand that some graduates may choose not to attend a formal graduation ceremony, and we respect their choice.” A formal graduation ceremony will be held on either June 26th, July 17th, or August 7th, on the earliest date once conditions allow. If Uintah County’s risk status does not move to Green as outlined in the state’s COVID-19 response plan by August 1st then no graduation ceremony will be held.
