Highway 191 south of Duchesne was closed down for most of Friday and Saturday after a tanker crashed on the Carbon County side of the line, resulting in a major oil spill. According to the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, approximately 4000 gallons of yellow waxy crude oil spilled onto the roadway and down into Willow Creek on Highway 191 at milepost 257. Among those that responded were hazmat crews responsible for cleanup. By Friday night it was announced that the spill was contained. There were spots of crude oil up to a mile downstream of the incident but officials said crews were working to ensure water would be restored to pre-incident conditions. In response to concern expressed, officials reassured that there was no need for concern regarding the safety of the water downstream and that water testing will continue until clean-up is complete. Highway 191 was reopened Saturday evening. While the road is now open, all travelers are asked to use extreme caution as the cleanup effort continues.
