Scouting in the Basin Sees Surge in Family Centered Scouting

For any that might be wondering, the long tradition of Scouting in the Uintah Basin lives on and is experiencing a surge of enthusiasm for family centered Scouting. BSA High Uintah District Executive Joni Crane says that some of the changes to Scouting that initially received skepticism are being embraced and families are reaping the benefits. “Those changes making the most difference are the implementation of Lion and Tiger Cubs age 5 and 6 where a parent attends as a participant until they transition to Wolf Den,” explains Crane. Another positive change has been allowing all children in a family to join the same Cub Scout pack. “Children are still separated into gender specific dens,” explains Crane. “Once a month, however, the entire family attends Pack meeting where all their children receive recognition for their efforts. These changes encourage family centered activities; Outdoor opportunities to learn skills, personal growth through family activities and support and encouragement from family and other Scouts to set and reach goals on a regular basis.” Local Scouting now consists of 4 Boy Troops, 2 Girl Troops, 1 Crew, 2 Family Packs, and 1 Boys Pack. There are currently about 50 youth signed up to attend this weekend’s Klondike event at Bacon Park. The event costs $10 for a registered scout, $25 for a scouting family (of 3 or more), or $20 for non-scout campers. There is still time to sign up but you must register online and print and bring your receipt.
