Although there has been a shake up to the Boy Scouts of America organization, it has not changed the local tradition of the Klondike Derby. This winter camping event, with an annual sled race, has long been a part of the scouting experience and even though things are different this adventure does not need to be. This year the scouts have invited other youth organizations to take part. “Winter Camp has always been a favorite and the High Uintah District of Scouts BSA has a bunch of new Troops and Packs formed,” shares BSA High Uintah District Executive Joni Crane. “We have decided to continue the tradition of Klondike even though we know it will be a smaller group. However, we are happy to host your organization if you would like to attend. The only criteria is that your youth group must register all at one time, attend with two-deep leadership, and provide proof of liability insurance coverage for your group.” There will be the sled race, best fort/igloo contest, fire building race, biggest snowball, caterpillar race and a special campfire guest. The Klondike will start Friday January 24th, with groups able to set up campsites starting at noon, and will go until Saturday, January 25th until 2pm. The camp will be at James Bacon Scout Park. The event costs $10 for a registered scout, $25 for a scouting family (of 3 or more), or $20 for non-scout campers. For more information, call Dan John at 435-219-5816.
