The youth waterfowl hunting season opens throughout September with the general season opening up through the month of October. To help hunters bag a bird, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has a few tips. For those hunting duck, the conditions are great with a high water year creating great nesting conditions, especially early in the season. The DWR assistant wildlife program chief Blair Stringham says, “Hunters can greatly improve their success during the duck hunt by spending some time scouting before each hunt. Learning where and when birds are in a specific location can allow hunters to be where the birds want to be, when they want to be there, and will greatly increase the number of birds they harvest.” For a successful goose hunt a good call is critical. Finally, for those that are hunting swans be aware that swans will vacate their resting areas to feed in the morning, late afternoon, and anytime during the day when temperatures get colder. Scout ahead to determine when the swan will be moving. If you are looking to add some fun and challenge to your hunt consider completing the Waterfowl Slam where hunters complete different requirements to earn a slam. There are 10 slams of varying difficulty. To learn more about the slams, visit wildlife.utah.gov.
