Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Alert!

Another day means another warning that scammers are after your hard earned money. The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is the latest to issue a Scam Alert. The Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam where callers, using the Sheriff’s Office phone number (435-738-2015), falsely identify themselves as deputies and demand payment via Venmo to avoid jail time. Remember: The Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call and ask for bail money over the phone or outside of the jail. If you receive a call like this, hang up and report it immediately. This method is on the rise and is called spoofing. Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Scammers often use neighbor spoofing so it appears that an incoming call is coming from a local number, or spoof a number from a company or a government agency that you may already know and trust. Don’t fall for it! Hang up and then contact the agency directly.
