Uintah High alums from the Class of 1969 have proven their commitment to their alma mater with the presentation of $19,000 to go towards furnishing study rooms in the UHS Teen Center currently under construction. A group from the class presented the funds to the Uintah School Board during Wednesday’s meeting and the class is challenging other Uintah High alums to find ways to support district programs. The UHS Teen Center project is remodeling about 1,500 square feet of space in the high school that was previously used for the Agricultural Sciences classrooms. The teen center will house a food pantry, have a washer and dryer, study rooms, and 2 bathrooms with private showers. Once complete, it will be open during the school’s business hours and a main population it will serve are the Uintah High students who are experiencing homelessness and the Uintah County students that are defined as food insecure. The district reported earlier this year that there are about 2 dozen students experiencing homelessness. The Uintah School Board got the ball rolling on the project last February and the teen center is expected to open sometime in January 2025. The project is funded by $250,000 in grant money from the state of Utah, as well as a grant for $40,000 in matching funds from The Policy Project, a Utah-based nonprofit. The balance of the renovation is being paid for with money the district already has in its savings for capital projects.
