A Change.Org petition is circulating started by a Duchesne County family therapist calling for a reduction in the charges against a teen that allegedly shot and killed a 14-year-old family member in a dispute on September 22nd. The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office reported that 16-year-old Haegan Sagers was taken into custody after the shooting and was being held at the Split Mountain Youth Detention Center in Vernal. Sagers was then charged as an adult in 8th District Court with 1st Degree Felony Murder and 1st Degree Felony Discharge of a Firearm. The Change.Org petition was started by Cassandra Moore who claims that “charging a mentally delayed child as an adult is not only disproportionate but also overtly unjust, disregarding the child’s unique cognitive circumstances.” The petition lists Duchesne County Attorney Stephen Foote, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, and Governor Spencer Cox as decision makers. As of Monday morning the petition had 476 signatures.
