A tragedy occurred earlier this month in Roosevelt that has resulted in a new safety push from Roosevelt City Police Chief Mark Watkins. The tragedy occurred near Golf Course Drive and Areva Road when several children (aged 11, 12, and 13) were driving down the road in a golf cart when the 12-year-old driver made a sharp turn and a 13-year-old girl fell from the golf cart. She was transported to the Uintah Basin Medical Center then Primary Children’s Hospital, where she passed away as a result of injuries sustained during her fall. The announcement from Roosevelt Police Department shared that the girl who passed away was from Texas and in town visiting family. It also shared that this has shined a light on the issue of unlicensed minors driving golf carts, ATVs, motorcycles, and other motorized vehicles on city streets. Roosevelt City Police Chief Mark Watkins has instructed his officers to stop any children engaged in this behavior and that parents who allow their children to illegally operate motor-vehicles may be cited, and the vehicles may be impounded.
