There is plenty to learn from the Daggett County Jail scandal and other law agencies are taking note. When asked what Uintah County is doing to prevent similar fiascos, Sheriff Vance Norton first commended Daggett County on being proactive and expressed confidence in the steps they are taking in the aftermath of their situation. He then gave a more personal response. “I will be down in the jail every week, in there and doing things right alongside my folks, from the jail commander down to the newest hire,” says Sheriff Norton. “I will be looking at things and asking questions, not only to make things better but also so they understand who I am as the Sheriff, that I care about them and I care that our inmates are taken care of the right way.” Sheriff Norton is not afraid to get up from the desk and put in time with the rest of his officers. “I go out on the road and do patrol shifts,” shares Norton, who says he wants to see the problems the county is facing first hand and invites the public to bring their concerns to him. “If a citizen has a complaint,” says Norton, “they can get with me and hopefully we can make it better.”
