A tragic accident claimed the life of an on-duty park ranger with ties to Dinosaur National Monument as he was working in Bryce Canyon National Park on Friday. NPS shares that on June 7th, 78-year-old Park Ranger Tom Lorig was working with park visitors at Bryce Canyon’s annual Astronomy Festival when he fell and struck his head on a large rock. Attempts at life saving care were unsuccessful. Lorig began his work with the National Park Service in June of 1968. In the decades that followed, he would serve at 14 national park sites including Badlands, Bryce Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Zion and more. The National Park Service noted that his time serving at Dinosaur National Monument was especially special to him and was the site he was most fond of. Bryce Canyon National Park Superintendent Jim Ireland extended condolences to all of Ranger Lorig’s family and friends as they grieve this difficult loss.
