Prescribed burns are underway in the Flaming Gorge Ranger District and are expected to run through May 21st. As always, burning is contingent upon acceptable weather conditions. “Timing of the prescribed fire should allow for its completion prior to Memorial Day weekend, having the burn in patrol and mop-up status,” shares the announcement. “Engine, hotshot, and/or hand crews will monitor the fire until completely extinguished. The prescribed fire is part of the ‘D1 Ponderosa Pine Maintenance and Fuels Reduction Project’. Its purpose is to return fire to the environment to restore healthy ecosystems and reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfires.” Multiple agencies are assisting and the prescribed burns are expected to cause minimal impact to areas or activities outside of the burn units. Smoke will likely be visible. More information is available on the Ashley National Forest website on fs.usda.gov.
