A wildfire on Ouray National Wildlife Refuge that started a week ago has been declared officially out. The Avalon and Lapoint-Tridell Fire Department and Uintah Fire District were joined by crews from the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service, and BLM to battle the blaze that was first reported on April 10th. A report from the Wildlife Refuge given to KUTV shared that the fire was caused by a maintenance person using a skid steer in preparation for a prescribed burn for later this month. The fire was in the Leota Bottom area of the Refuge and covered about 65 acres. Being early on in the fire season, the Leota Fire is technically the largest fire in Utah so far for 2024.
