The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Utah Department of Transportation are working together to reduce wildlife/vehicle collisions around the state and to make it easier for wildlife during annual migrations. While there are safety corridor projects being installed around the state this year, a project planned for the Uintah Basin is still in the stage of gathering funding. A DWR press release recently shared that they have partnered with UDOT to conduct a study in 2023 to analyze the feasibility of wildlife crossings and fencing along Highway 40 in Duchesne County. Duchesne County is among the partners applying for funding for the anticipated US-40 Wildlife Safety Corridor Project. They approved a letter during a Commission meeting last month to be sent to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation requesting grant funding for the project. It is hoped that the project will add around 23 miles of wildlife fencing and escape ramps, as well as a new wildlife underpass between Fruitland and Starvation Reservoir.
