Men in Black Pull “Monumentally Sized” Pen Through Northeastern Utah

Not to be mistaken for two missionaries on a service project or a pair of agents from Men in Black, a duo of German artists have come to northeastern Utah to launch a very unique art project. The two men and their giant ballpoint pen, passed through Vernal last week as they walk a route of about 250 miles through northeastern Utah, northwestern Colorado, and southern Wyoming. The website dedicated to the project and where a virtual line is being drawn on a map as the men progress explains the art in these words: “A man in suit pulls a monumentally sized pen through the wilderness expanse of North America. Instead of creating a lasting, visible mark, the pen only leaves a temporary imprint on the surface of the ground. Nevertheless, the man stoically persists on the route…The absurd quality of linear symbolizes the attempts we make to assign meaning to our human endeavors in general and to those of the artist in particular.” The men are taking turns pulling the pen and filming the other. Their website says the short film will document the “action as well as fictional elements woven together to create a complex hypothesis.” Visit
