This week, Discovery Elementary had its 3rd annual Dia De Muertos celebration complete with an ofrenda in the lobby of the school. The display was first erected in November 2021 by teachers and students from the school’s Spanish language dual immersion program to help students, staff and the community celebrate their loved ones who have died. “Día de Muertos is a traditional Mexican celebration,” shares the announcement, “known in English as Day of the Dead. It is a time for families to honor and remember deceased loved ones during the harvest season. Discovery’s multi-tiered display features brightly-colored table coverings, tombstones, flowers, skeletons, paper banners, candles, salt, clothing, and bread for the dead.” Students, staff, and the community were invited to add photos of their loved ones or place offerings on the ofrenda, including fruit, cookies, candy, breads, drinks, and books, which many did.
