DWR Proposed Changes Include More Opportunities to Hunt Elk

by | Nov 9, 2017 | News | 0 comments

Hunting more elk is on the table along with other proposed changes from the Division of Wildlife Resources for the 2018 Big Game Hunts. What’s being considered? Giving bull elk hunters a chance to hunt all three seasons – which are the archery, rifle, and muzzleloader hunts – on the state’s spike-only and any-bull general elk hunting units. Elk have a statewide population of more than 80,000 animals and the elk hunter success rate remains fairly low. As a result, biologists feel comfortable allowing the extension of bull hunting to all three seasons. Their permit would only allow them to take one elk so the hunt would end for the year as soon as they’ve had success. If numbers during the first year goes beyond the set limit, then the opportunity would be reexamined for 2019. Public input is welcome at the next Regional Advisory Council meeting
on November 16th at 6:30pm
at the DWR office in Vernal.
