Ashley National Forest reports that the Alliance for Green Heat is now accepting applications for the 2024 Firewood Bank Grant Program. Firewood banks provide emergency and seasonal wood for heating homes. Similar to food banks, firewood banks can be run by nonprofits, churches and other religious organizations, state or local governments, or tribes. Typically, firewood banks are run entirely by volunteers, who help split, stack, and store wood to be picked up by or delivered to those in need. The application period goes until the funds are allocated, with grants up to $20,000. Eligible expenses include chain saws, splitters, tarps, moisture meters, conveyor belts, trailers, wheelbarrows, safety equipment, first aid kits, equipment repair, building materials for firewood sheds or tool sheds, educational materials/activities, sales tax, signage, travel, gas money, and miscellaneous supplies like small tools that cost less than $20. Apply at www.firewoodbanks.org and reach out to the Alliance for Green Heat with any questions. The application period opened this month and is open until the funds are fully allocated.
