UDOT announced around 3pm on Monday that Highway 6 between Helper and Soldier Summit officially reopened at greatly reduced speeds. At 3:30pm on Sunday afternoon, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office announced that Highway 6 was closed in Price Canyon due to flooding. The Utah Department of Transportation released images that showed a massive mudslide and debris covering the roadway as well as extensive damage to the infrastructure. UDOT hoped to open the roadway at reduced speed on Monday morning but it took until mid afternoon to accomplish the task. Multiple mudslides were also reported in Indian Canyon on Sunday evening with Highway 191 closed between milepost 290 and 259. The largest mudslide on Highway 191 was 5 feet deep across the road and there were travelers stuck between the mudslides. Thankfully, crews were able to get it cleared Sunday night, sending travelers on their way. Clearing 191 was especially good as it is one of the only commercial alternate routes for Highway 6. Major repairs on Highway 6 will take at least a few days and a culvert project that aims to mitigate flooding in situations like what happened on Sunday will continue to be worked toward. The mudslide and damage to Highway 6 was due to the burn scar from the 2021 Bear Fire.
