Campers enjoying the weekend in the Rock Creek drainage areas on the Ashley National Forest had quite a surprise on Saturday. A microcell dumped over an inch of rain in about 30 minutes which caused massive debris to slide down the mountain in multiple locations, blocking the road and making travel off the mountain impossible and unsafe. Duchesne County road crews quickly responded and worked around the clock to clear up to a dozen mud and debris slides covering the roadway. Duchesne County Commissioner Irene Hansen shared with Evans Family Media on Sunday evening that as of last report, the road crews were able to get at least 1 lane cleared so that campers could safely get down the mountain. Duchesne County has worked hard to address the damage done in both the Moon Lake and Rock Creek drainages caused within the burn scar of the 2020 East Fork Fire. Saturday’s flooding just shows how dangerous burn scars can be during future flooding events. Forest officials shared that all campgrounds in the Rock Creek drainage on the Ashley National Forest will be closed at least through Wednesday.
