Watch For Harmful Algal Blooms In Several Northeastern Utah Waterbodies

The threat from Harmful Algal Blooms is present in at least three waterbodies in northeastern Utah. A Harmful Algal Bloom means that algae is in the water that may be producing dangerous toxins that can make humans and animals sick. TriCounty Health Department has issued a Warning Advisory at both Crouse and Matt Warner Reservoirs stating that Harmful Algae is present. This means that it is not safe to swim or water ski in the water. Boats are allowed on the water but it’s important to avoid the areas of algae, keep animals away, and not drink the water. Fishing is allowed but the fish must be cleaned well and the guts must be discarded. Steinaker State Park staff have also seen visible signs of Harmful Algal Bloom at Steinaker Reservoir in recent weeks. A Health Watch has been issued to inform visitors that harmful algae is present but the guidelines are not as strict as the Warning Advisory accompanying the other waterbodies. Swimming is allowed but it is important to not swim or waterski in the areas where algae is present. It is still important to not drink the water, to clean fish very well, and to keep animals away. Dogs can be exposed to toxins by skin contact with water that is contaminated with cyanobacteria or toxins, by swallowing water or by licking the water off their fur or hair. If you suspect your pet has been exposed to a Harmful Algal Bloom, seek immediate care from your veterinarian. Find more information about harmful algal blooms at habs.utah.gov.
