See Hummingbirds Up Close At Free DWR Event This Month

There are few things as magical as seeing a hummingbird up close and in person and a chance to experience just that is right around the corner. The DWR has partnered with the BLM and U.S. Forest Service to host a hummingbird banding demonstration this month. During the event, the researchers capture the hummingbirds and then place a small band on one leg of each bird. These bands identify each bird throughout its lifetime. The information gathered from the banding efforts helps biologists learn more about the birds’ migration patterns and other crucial data. “It’s a rare and unique opportunity to see Utah’s tiniest pollinating birds in hand, and watch biologists gather baseline data to determine strategies for conserving these birds, their habitat and future research needs,” shares DWR Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby. “The population status of many hummingbird species is unknown. These banding efforts help educate our local community, and also help us collect information that may be crucial for making future management decisions.” DWR biologists and staff will be on hand to answer questions about hummingbirds during the free demonstration. The event is taking place on Saturday, July 29th from 7 to 11am at Red Canyon Lodge.
