Caving Rescue Prompts Reminders for Outdoor Adventurers

The rescue of a group of cavers this week in northern Uintah County provides the opportunity to review safe practices when adventuring outdoors. The incident involved  a 24-year-old California man who was seriously injured when he fell approximately 50 feet while exploring inside the Little Brushcreek cave system on Sunday evening. His group was exploring at night and did not have appropriate equipment or experience. One member of the party was able to get out and call for help but the injured man and two of his companions required an extensive 12 plus hour rescue effort. Once out of the cave Monday morning, the injured man was airlifted from the scene for medical treatment. The lessons that can be learned from this experience are rather simple, shares the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office. First, make sure you have provisions, extra food, water, batteries, first aid kit, and essentials before taking on such an adventure. Also make sure you have the needed equipment that will be adequate for whatever you are out doing. Most important, make sure the adventure isn’t beyond your capabilities, training, and experience. Let someone know where you are and when you expect to return.
