The Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra enjoyed an amazing opportunity this month with a visit from Dr. Michael Palumbo, Music Director and Conductor of Chamber Orchestra Ogden. Dr. Palumbo served for 31 years as the Director of Orchestral Studies and Professor of Viola at Weber State University before retiring in 2013. He has served on countless national boards, societies, and conducted countless festivals around the United States. When Director of UBYCO Brad Vanfleet invited Dr. Palumbo to come to Vernal for a clinic he never imagined just how well the experience would turn out for all involved. Dr. Palumbo as much as anyone was excited with how well it all went. “I didn’t know what to expect but I got here and the group was way above what I expected,” shared Dr. Palumbo at the conclusion of the clinic on January 11th. “It’s obvious the Director here has done a great job. These kids are invested in what they do. They worked hard and were well prepared and that to me, makes it great fun.” Dr. Palumbo spent the afternoon in one-on-one lessons with viola players and then worked with the entire youth orchestra for two-and-a-half hours.
