Some Wyoming lawmakers have responded to a situation in which a Rock Springs couple is suing Sweetwater County School District No. 1 after learning that allegedly the District actively and without their knowledge helped their daughter socially transition to a boy. Cowboy State Daily published an article on Wednesday stating that Wyoming Senator Dan Dockstader now plans to reintroduce Senate File 117, the Parental Rights in Education Act, which was kept from reaching the House in this year’s legislative session. Representative Clark Stith of Rock Springs also intends to bring back a parental rights bill he sponsored that also did not make it through this year’s session. Stith told Cowboy State Daily that HB 78 does not micromanage school districts but it does say the school district has to honor parental rights. The current lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for Wyoming by Sean and Ashley Willey, asserts that the District took away their parental and due process rights, familial privacy rights, and religious rights. The Willeys allege that no one at the school said anything to them about their daughter’s transition for at least 6 months.
