Four outdoor pickleball courts will be constructed in Vernal in Spring 2023. Vernal City Manager Quinn Bennion reports that thanks to the coordinated efforts of 8 entities the funds were secured to construct public pickleball courts in Independence Park next to the Vernal Middle School. “The project is scheduled for construction in April after the winter weather,” shares Bennion. “Pickleball is the fastest growing recreational sport in the country and hundreds of courts have been constructed in Utah communities in the last ten years. The sport is enjoyed by all ages and skill levels.” The entities making this project possible are Uintah Recreation District, Uintah School District, Vernal City, Uintah County, Uintah Basin Healthcare, Ashley Regional Medical Center, Rocky Mountain Power Foundation and the Healthy & Active Lifestyle Committee. “We receive regular feedback about no public pickleball courts in the area,” comments Vernal City Mayor Doug Hammond. “This joint project shows the strong cooperation of local entities to benefit our community and encourage healthy activities.”
