The snow and winter weather does not scare off Uintah Basin residents from getting outside for winter recreation but unfortunately, the winter season of snow fun is also a season of injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2018, nearly 200,000 people were injured while engaging in winter sports. Sprains, strains, dislocations and fractures were the most common but not far behind is concussions and other head injuries. Of the roughly 600,000 ski and snowboarding related injuries, 20% are head injuries. Some things that people can do to be more safe include wear a helmet to cut down on head injuries. Be sure to check your gear that it is in good condition. While proper winter attire is essential, a common overlooked item is having plenty of water to make sure you do not suffer from dehydration. Some other safe practices include going with a buddy, being aware of weather and terrain, doing dynamic stretching before you start and taking rest breaks.
