The Union High School CAPS entrepreneurship team is community minded and their latest project proves it. Program advisor Michael North explains that the team met with Uintah Basin Healthcare, specifically UFitness personnel, and asked about what health problems are prevalent in the Basin. The answer was health problems related to diabetes and obesity.
After further brainstorming, the entrepreneurship team suggested a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. “It was fun to watch the learning and challenges from this project,” shares CPAS advisor Michael North. “I watched as the students walked through the steps of starting and running a business. They created the marketing and advertising, pricing and forecast, strategy, design and execution of the event. They experienced the fear of failure but realized success.”
The tournament included 13 teams in the 4th to 8th grade age group, 8 high schools teams and 7 adult teams. From the tournament, proceeds in the amount of $1500 were given to the Thompsen House of Hope. “I am proud of their efforts,” continues North. “Not only did they learn business, they donated the money to a great cause; And they are not done yet. We still have until the middle of January to end the semester. I am excited to see what comes next.”
