It’s been a long week for the residents in Meeker after a natural gas leak was discovered around 6pm on Halloween. Provider Atmos Energy contacted the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office communication center requesting assistance from Meeker Police Department and Meeker Fire and Rescue to notify and keep citizens away from the 600 block of Main Street. All buildings on the south side of Main Street between 6th and 7th street had to be evacuated as quickly as possible and that entire area had to remain evacuated for an extended period as crews worked on repairing the line. Natural gas had to be shut down for a much larger area than the evacuated area. The evacuation area was eventually lifted and citizens were allowed to return as of the morning of November 2nd and natural gas was restored to all areas by Wednesday. Over 60 homes and businesses in the town of Meeker were affected and without natural gas during the repair. Meeker Police and many citizens took to social media to express their thanks to Atmos Energy for their hard work and professionalism in keeping everyone safe during this incident.
