A Uintah High alum and former Ute wrestler did what he could to help his teammates who were attacked by a grizzly bear on Saturday near Cody, Wyoming. August Harrison of Vernal was shed hunting with three of his Northwest College wrestling teammates on October 15th when he and one teammate went one direction and his other teammates, Brady Lowry and Kendall Cummings, went another direction. What happened next for Lowry and Cummings was terrifying beyond belief. A grizzly bear emerged from the brush and charged and mauled Lowry. He curled in a ball and Lowry says Cummings came at the bear from behind trying to get it to let up. The bear turned and attacked Cummings but then returned to Lowry. Miraculously, the grizzly eventually walked away, leaving the young men still alive. Once he saw his seriously wounded teammates, August Harrison ran to help. They called 9-1-1 and rushed Lowry and Cummings to the trailhead where they were met by search and rescue. Both young men were transported to the hospital in Billings, Montana and have undergone surgeries. Wyoming Game and Fish issued a release regarding the attack: “In the vicinity where the attack occurred, reports from landowners and hunters indicate there may be six to 10 different bears moving between agricultural fields and low elevation slopes. Game and Fish will continue to monitor bear activity in the area and work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make management decisions in the best interest of public safety. This is a sad and unfortunate situation, we wish both victims a full and speedy recovery.”
