Rail became the focus of the ‘Direct Link With Governor Cox’ program held last week while he was in southern Utah. Duchesne County Commissioner Greg Miles asked the Governor what he considers the biggest transportation issue on the horizon. Governor Cox’s answer focused on the importance of infrastructure, specifically the importance of rail transport. The legislature has been supportive in putting additional money in infrastructure. When talking about rural Utah, Cox shared that he recently found some newspaper articles from the 1890s talking about trains in the Uintah Basin.Cox emphasized how important the Uintah Basin Railway is but he said he wants to think even bigger. “High speed rail has been on my mind for a long time,” shared Cox, who is involved in open discussions with Idaho and Nevada over the possibility of a high speed rail to run from Boise to Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and points in between. Cox said that it’s time to get the government out of the way and start thinking bigger.
