September 9th, 2021 was a day MaKayla Adams will never forget. It was the day she was sent to Primary Children’s Hospital because she was in diabetic ketoacidosis. Learning about life with Type 1 Diabetes and living it for over a year now has been a lot to take on but MaKayla, who attends Naples Elementary School, has focused on getting educated and educating others. “MaKayla took a few minutes at the beginning of the school year to teach her 5th grade class about diabetes,” shares her mother Stephanie. “We have learned knowledge is power, and the more you know, the less people get angry or annoyed about those who ‘have to break the rules’ and why accommodations have to be made.” MaKayla is also happy to be part of DiaBESTIES, a community for those with Type 1 Diabetes that is starting back up and meeting today. “I started the group DiaBESTIES to help build a community so those with T1D do not feel alone,” explains Stephanie. “DiaBESTIES is a place where diabetics and their parents can come share stories and learn from each other. But most of all, to have fun together.” DiaBESTIES will now be meeting in the Uintah Rec Center conference room every 3rd Monday of each month from 5 to 6pm. It is for parents, children, teens, and adults with diabetes.
