Human Caused ‘Dinosaur Headquarters Fire’ Reported in Dinosaur National Monument

The fire within Dinosaur National Monument that started Sunday evening is contained. According to a release from the National Park Service, a motorist reported a wildfire north of Highway 40 near Dinosaur National Monument headquarters at approximately 6:10pm on June 3rd. The Dinosaur Headquarters Fire was last GPS assessed as 17 acres. An interagency crew of fire departments from Artesia, Jensen, Rangely, the BLM and NPS quickly responded to the call. Nearby residents were alerted to the fire but no evacuation was ordered and no structures were lost or threatened. According to Dinosaur National Monument representative Dan Johnson, the fire is contained but as of Tuesday afternoon was not considered controlled. He also reports that the fire was human caused. The Canyon Visitor Center and Harper’s Corner Road are open but the Cold Desert Trail is closed until further notice. The Quarry Visitor Center and Quarry Exhibit Hall remain open to the public on their normal schedule.
