The ‘Our Schools Now’ initiative has had one focus since its formation last year, to work with Utah Legislature to increase education funding. Uintah High School English teacher and current Utah Teacher of the Year Aaryn Birchell is the face of the latest video from the group explaining how a gas tax increase could be the answer to education funding woes. Utah schools are still in the group of the lowest funded in the United States and the gas tax ballot initiative was a compromise struck after ‘Our Schools Now’ supporters and state legislators worked back and forth for many months. The initiative proposes a 10-cent gas tax increase for education funding that will be on the November ballot in a non-binding vote. In the latest ‘Our Schools Now’ video, Mrs. Birchell explains how a gas tax will free up general funding to give each classroom an estimated additional $3,400 dollars each year to improve student achievement on the local level.
