Healthy grass will actually choke out most undesirable plants. Frequent, proper mowing helps maintain a beautiful lawn. Never cut more than one third of the grass blade at one mowing. If your lawn has become overgrown and is suddenly cut too short, the exposed lower portions of the blade will be burned by the sun, and the grass must use energy and nutrients stored in the roots to replenish the top growth. If this happens during extreme heat, the resulting stress can cause the grass to die out in spots. If the grass is overgrown, set your mower on the highest blade height possible, and then repeat mowing with a lower blade height after two or three days. Dry fertilizer should be used on lawns in the spring, early summer, and fall, when daytime temperatures are under 85. If used when the temperature is over 85, most dry fertilizers can burn your lawn. If it’s really hot, put the fertilizer on in the cool evening and give it a good soaking. Dry weed and feed should also not be applied to your lawn when the daytime temperatures go over 85, because you cannot water for two days after using it. Use dry weed and feeds in the spring and fall, when temperatures are under 85. To apply, do a heavy watering and spread while the grass is still wet. The lawn has to be wet for the weed killer to stick to the weed leaves. The weed killer acts by penetrating

the leaves

– if the weed isn’t wet, the weed killer doesn’t stick, and it doesn’t kill. Don’t water for two days after using a dry weed and feed. Use

liquid

weed and feed on your lawn, early evening is best, when temperatures go over 85. There are also excellent liquid lawn weed killers that don’t contain any fertilizer that can be applied any time. Hose end sprayers are a convenient and effective way to use these lawn weed killers. Along with your fertilizer or weed and feed, use Natural Guard HuMate Granules. This HuMate Granules build beneficial microbes in the soil, helping your lawn make better use of fertilizer and water than ever before. Your lawn will stay thick, green and lush if you use HuMate Granules every time you fertilize.
