Thankfully all survived an accident on the ice of Strawberry Reservoir
on Saturday morning
. According to Wasatch County Search and Rescue, a party heading out for some ice fishing, traveling on snowmobiles across the ice, fell
through at around 8:30am
. There was one male driving his own snowmobile with a husband and wife following on a second snowmobile when the party “happened upon a spot at the reservoir that had little ice coverage. After going into the lake, sleds and all, they were able to self rescue and get a call out for help.” All three individuals were treated by Wasatch EMS. The snowmobiles were not so lucky, however, and made a trip to the bottom of the reservoir. While Strawberry Reservoir is generally very safe, there are springs that create weak spots. “The ice layers on the lake are not uniform,” shares Wasatch County Search and Rescue. “Some areas can still be dangerous. Be careful out there.” Visitors to the reservoir are welcome to stop by the Strawberry Marina store and pick up a map of the area before a great day of fishing. Also

East Canyon
Reservoir and was rescued by a park ranger. Officials at the Department of Natural Resources has offered a reminder that applies to anyone heading out onto ice this winter. Remember the ice isn’t always as strong or thick as it appears. When it comes to ice safety, the minimum thickness needed is 12 inches for trucks or SUVs, 9 inches for small automobiles, 6 inches for snowmobiles or ATVs, 5 inches for a small group of people spread out, and 4 inches for one person. Anything under 4 inches is unsafe. Stay off!
