Union V. Richfield Recap by Mark Mason

Roosevelt, Utah

September 9th 2016

On Homecoming night with the crowning of the royalty, a helicopter flying into the stadium and all of the other pomp and ceremony going on around the football team, the brightest stars of the night were the Union Cougar Football team. Hosting the Richfield Wildcats the Cougars made quick work of the game.

On the first possession of the game quarterback Emmett Hafen of Richfield was stripped of the ball at midfield, giving Union a short field. Just three plays later Cole Betroth found Tyler Swain in the right corner of the end zone with a beautiful back shoulder throw for the first points of the game. Union held again on defense with a diving interception by Gage Roberts setting up one of the longest throws in Union history when Bertoch hit Birchell streaking down the left sideline for a 69 yard touchdown, sending the cougar crazies into a frenzy in the stands.

After another 3 and out by the defense, quarterback Carson Kelly came back in for Union, having been hurt earlier in the season and took the offense down for its first rushing touchdown of the game when he called his own number from the 6 yard line dancing around the defense until he dove in for the touchdown.

Richfield finally got on the boards with their 5th possession of the game when quarterback Emmet Hafen took it up the middle for 44 yards and a touchdown making the score 21-7. Union used their timeouts wisely and managed the clock driving down the field at the end of the first half setting up kicker Jace White for a 30 yard field goal making the half time score 24-7.

In the second half penalties and turnovers threatened to make the game close as Union turned the ball over and committed personal fouls setting up Richfield twice with a short field. The defense, it turns out, was up to the challenge led by #72 Inoke Kafusi who twice got through the line on critical 3rd and 4th goal line downs to stop the Wildcats on consecutive possessions.

Jace White scored another field goal to take the score to 27-7 and on the following kickoff sent a perfect onside kick to the left side of the field taking advantage of a return team that wasn’t ready for the trickery. Union took the ball down the field and Betroth hit Swain for a 2 yard TD reception taking the score to 34-7. Jace White wrapped up the scoring with another field goal to make the final score 37-7.

Game notes:

Jace White had the perfect game for a kicker hitting 4 extra points, 2 field goals, and converting an onside kick… Both teams were 0-3 coming into the game… Classic Air Medical flew the game ball in on their helicopter… Union scored another touchdown called back on a personal foul penalty… Carson Kelly played most of the game as tailback after coming back from a serious injury earlier in the season.

The Union Cougar Football team traveled to Vernal to take on the Uintah Utes for the Basin Bowl and the right to retain the traveling trophy.  The Cougs kept things even with no score in the first quarter, but the Utes broke it open after that, handing the Cougars a 49-0 defeat.  Vaihoi Lutui had two receptions for 36 yards and Christian Llamas had six tackles including a sack.  They'll host Richfield Friday.
