Winter the Best Time for Chukar Hunting

by | Dec 15, 2016 | News | 0 comments

Snow on the ground is good news for chukar hunters. The cold causes the birds to concentrate in smaller areas, making them easier to find. DWR Upland Game Coordinator Jason Robinson considers winter the best time of year to hunt chukars and notes that “chukar are the best-tasting game bird in Utah.” Hunters are reporting a successful hunt season so far with larger groups of birds than years past. The main tips being offered are to scout areas for likely chukar hideouts before you start hiking all over. As a rule of thumb, chukars need three things: cliffs for roosting, shrubby cover nearby and grass to eat. The hunt runs
until February 15th.
